what a start! i wanted to start this blog on a good note and what better than anurag kashyap. i love the guy. i loved 'no smoking' no matter what people say. kitsch is my kick.
dev.d is a cool, 21st century take on sarat chandra's 1917 novella. it's a 100 year leap. and what a giant one for mankind. dev(abhay deol) is horny, loves smoking, weed and alcohol and isn't afraid to admit he's all of it. he's rich and spoilt. paro(mahi gill) looks like a bad version of tabu and acts like one too. she's poor and horny and has slept (or not, it's a little confusing) with a villager who's even uglier than she is. what's good about her is she isn't guilty about what she's done. she's a 'sex and the village' belle. go girl! dev is a little narrow for someone who's been in london a while but i guess it's for the story to move forward. he just needs a reason to dump her and drink/smoke/snort more. paro marries a rich guy for his money and moves out. dev gets depressed and moves out. he lands up in delhi or should i say the seamier part of dehli. begin downward spiral. booze, drugs, ciggies and hookers.
enter chandramukhi(kalki koechlin). she starts of as lenny and has a story of her own. while in school her boyfriend (geeeezz why is she seeing this guy?!) films her and she becomes the wrong kind of star. her father sees the film (whoa daddy) and shoots himself (why exactly i wonder?). mommy abandons the child and lenny ends up alone in ,where else, dehli. she's quite a woman this one. she studies by day and works as a CSW by night. dev is found by her 'agent' chunni(dont know this guy's name) who eventually brings him to her. then on sarat takes a leave. this is exactly how the story would've progressed in 2009 India.
bravo kashyap, take a bow! the music is AMAZING the cinematography is super and the characters are extremely well-defined. abhay is brilliant, kalki is perfect. mahi lacks something and she needs to learn acting. that's her job isn't it?
overall a must watch for everybody born after 1969. older people stay away. or watch the SRK shit version. in your face bansali!
RATING : 5 on 5.
